Sock Knitting Workshop

Sock Knitting February 20, February 27 and March 6, 2010
10 am – 12 noon
There is no class fee. This workshop is presented by the Olean Public Library. Students are responsible for purchasing their supplies. A supply list will be given upon registration at the library’s check-out desk. You must attend all three classes.

Sock knitting is addictive and winter is a great time to learn how! We will be knitting basic socks that are knit using 4 double pointed needles or two circular. You may choose. The pattern will be very plain, but will give you all of the necessary skills to move on to a more elaborate sock pattern if you wish.

The first week you will learn how to use double-pointed or circular needles and make the cuff. On week two we will turn the heel, and on week three we will stitch up our toes!

Registration is required. Materials must be purchased before class begins by student. You will be given a supply sheet upon registration.

Student knitter must know how to knit, purl and cast on and be comfortable with all. It is helpful if student knitter has completed at least one garment from a printed pattern.

Biography

Charley Orlando began knitting as a child, put it aside for a number of years, then started knitting again in 1961. He soon moved into the area of Aran Styles or Fisherman Knits and has been working mostly with them for nearly fifty years. He has taught many children and young adults to knit, many of whom have maintained and improved their knitting skills. For the past twelve years he has taught the very popular aran- and gansey-knitting at the John C. Campbell Folk School. He lives in Belmont, NY. You may see pictures of his work and the work done in his classes on his website http://www.orlandoforge.com. Just click on the knitting gallery and the class pictures icon.
